Description
India is a country with heterogenous populace in terms of language, culture, religion and ethnicity. Constitution of India affords protective measures required to safeguard this unique diversity and varied spaces that manifests the identity and dignity of the people. Yet integrity of the nation is assured through its legal system providing for uniform laws for the whole of the country in matters of criminal law, contract, property, and the like. The major exception to uniformity of laws is in the arena of family law, where the personal laws are allowed to be the legal domain. A plethora of judgments delivered by the apex Court have time and again stressed on the need to bring about uniformity and gender neutrality in the relevant laws.
