Description
We undertook the work on this third edition of Antonio Cassese's leading textbook on International Law both to pay tribute to his memory and profound influence on the field and, no less importantly, to contribute to the dissemination of his thought. Nino's moral and yet realistic vision of international law is greatly needed in the present international context. We are deeply grateful to Sylvia Fano Cassese, for her confidence in our project. Her trust and support have been very important to us. We have done our utmost to preserve Nino's voice and normative stances throughout the book while, at the same time, integrating the many developments of the last 15 years and some additional material on areas which have become central to the study of inter- national law, such as territorial disputes, maritime delimitation, extraterritorial application of human rights, international and domestic criminal prosecution, trade, foreign invest- ment, and environmental protection, among others. The format also follows earlier edi- tions, including in the referencing of cases, which are referred to only by name because the full reference is provided in the table of cases. To the best of our ability, we have preserved Nino's rare combination of a historically informed, conceptually strong, and practice-infused analysis of international law, which have provided the basis for the training of many generations of international lawyers in the four corners of the world. The authors of these lines are amongst those who greatly benefited from Nino's teach- ing and work. It is our hope that, with this new edition, his classic textbook will contribute to form the 'judicious reformers' in whom, at the end of his life, he placed his trust for the improvement of the international legal order.
