Women and Law: From Impoverishment to Empowerment. This book therefore is about the law rather than being a law book. The book aims at evaluating the ideas and beliefs concerning the relationship of a man to a woman as reflected in law both in retrospect and prospect. In this work, Prof. Lalita dhar oarihar examines the political, social, and religious factors that have determined the position of women in society. In reference to social justice an attempt has been made to define the legal distinction between a man and a woman. What is the necessity and justification for the differential treatment between the sex needs an indepth enquiry that seems to produce particular but no general answers. Thus, difficulties in writing a book of this kind have been both literal and intellectual. women's legal manifestations have been that of a special case, a category separate from men and the male norm on whom the spotlight falls. The law has remained silent on major aspects of women's existence so much so that she has on occasions been dwarfed to the level of a child, to the extent that even the makers of the constitution fell prey to it. The present work therefore revolves around the fundamental legal principle recognising the equal rights of all human beings to dignity and respect in both public and private spheres. Further, various statutes Governing the rights of women such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955; The Domestic Violence Act, 2005; The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention Of Misuse) Act , 1994; the MTP Act , 1971; The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 etc. have been analytically discussed in the book.
