Description
PROF. TOPE'S book on the Constitutional Law of India offers many challenges to an editor. In the midst of sober erudite commentary on various articles of the Constitution, one may suddenly find scathing criticism, strong comments or a critical analysis of a   constitutional issue. What comes through is a broad vision of the author on various constitutional issues, and this gives to the book its special character.Prof. Tope was a fierce defender of freedom under the Constitution. Apart from my respect for his scholarship, one of the reasons why I agreed to "do" the book was that we share a commitment to individual rights, and believe that the society needs to be structured to support and nurture these rights. Rights cannot exist in a vacuum. A just and fair socio-economic and political order founded on the rule of law alone can sustain and promote individual rights and freedoms. In an interactive free society, there has to be a respect for the rights of others as much as for one's own rights. I have tried to highlight fundamental rights, directive principles and fundamental duties under the Constitution in the framework of international human rights law.
