Description
An alphabetically arranged Index of Cases alongwith cross-citations is an integral part of any an integral part of any law library to meet the regular requirement of knowing the citation of any particular case. The present book fulfils that long felt need and covers cases of the Supreme Court reported since its inception in 1950 till 2011. The party names of the cases have been arranged in alphabetical order. Standard abbreviations as per convention or usage or by design have been utilised in the arrangement: the same are listed below as "Aids to use this Index". For guidance, cross-references have also been included appropriately. Some cases are known by their popular names like Fundamental Rights case, Mandal Commission Case, Privy Purse case, Habeas Corpus case, etc. Such names have been included for ease of reference. So also, many cases are more popularly known or recalled by the name of the respondent especially where any State or the Union of India is the appellant. Hence if a case is not found as an appellant/petitioner then one may go through the respondent names against "State of" and also against "Union of India". Again, it may be profitable to search under other spellings which are similar sounding like Gauri and Gouri, Indra and Indira, Lakshmi, Laxmi and Luxmi, Partap and Pratap, Swami and Swamy, etc. Yet again, even though sounding the same, many first names are separate or combined with the same or slightly variant spellings like Lakshmi Narayan and Laxminarayam, Madam Lal and Madanlal, Ram Narain and Ramnarayan, Sita Ram and Sitaram, etc.
Titles and appellations preceding the name are retained only if they are integrally connected to the name or by usage so established. So while Mr, Mrs, Smt, Dr, Firm, M/s. management of, Messers, Shri Etc. have generally been ignored, Shree and Sri are retained if part of the name as in case of institutions, religious bodies or companies. Military ranks, and Pandit/Pt. have been retained.
Where more than one case bear identical name they have been arranged chronologically according to their dates of decision given alongside. In case both the name and the date of decision are identical, the number of the Civil Appeal, Criminal Appeal, Writ petition or Interlocutory Application has been inserted to distinguish them. Constitution Bench cases and other decisions of bench strength of five and more have been given in bold and the bench strength (coram) indicated. Complete, prompt and accurate reporting have been the hallmarks of Supreme Court Cases (SCC) since its inception in 1969. Till the end of 2011 the complete set of SCC consists of 331 volumes and therefore one can expect to find lot more entries in this publication since it is based on SCC and all other important law reports such as AIR, SCR, ITR, CriLJ, ELT, STC, Comp Cas, FLR, FJR, LLF, SLR, AIC, etc. and the important State Journals. We acknowledge the valuable contribution make by all those who have been associated with the publication. They have by their dedication and commitment added quality, accuracy and utility to this publication and in that respect earned our warm appreciation. Despite all efforts the possibility of inadvertent errors cannot be rules out for which we crave indulgence of the readers. All suggestions for improvement are most welcome
