Description
"Many a gem of pures ray serene" the purple pages of this book does unveil, is an apt description of this great work by one of India's most eminent jurists. These are brief biographies of seven wondrous personalities of modern India that were legends in their own lifetime, universal spirits animated by a vast vision of humanity and endowed with an endearing quality of love that was pure divinity. Only Krishna lyer could have produced such a work spanning decades and telling us so intimately of frail Gandhiji and his prodigious courage, or the epic music and wisdom of Tagore. He describes the rich public and personal contributions of Nehru, the darling of humanity, the supreme humanist Dr. Ambedkar, considered as the modern Manu, Swami Vivekananda, the glorious spiritual revolutionary whom Nehru called the cyclonic Sadhu, Krishna Menon, the acid-tongued socialist without any warts, and the sharp-tongued Sathyamurthi whose barbs did more to dislodge the British colonial occupation than any other force. These elegant, eloquent portraits are painted in the purple prose of "dear Krishna" as he was affectionately called by Nehru, and whom history will surely place in the company of these magnificent seven'. Assuredly, this is no ordinary biography. Macaulay would have gone into raptures-"Homer is not more decidedly the first of heroic poets Demosthnes not more decidely the first of orators", than Krishna lyer is the first great biographers.

Author Details
Justice VR Krishna lyer, a former Minister of Kerala CPI Government, retired from Supreme Court in 1980. With erudition of highest order, he did not put aside the pen. His books are authority on law, Jurisprudence and superiority of judiciary. According to Justice RC Lahoti, former Chief Justice of India:" …he is a judge, a thought, an ideology and institution by himself. The contribution made by him to the development of Jurisprudence in India inspired by Gandhian philosophy is unique and un-parallel. Scholars would read his judgments and other writings always with keen interest..."
Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman, says, his vuice in Supreme Court was of compassion and of justice. His writings reveal anguish over the corruption and decline now creeping in the vitals of the higher courts, and the need to arrest this trend.
