Description
THE PLEASANT event of space exploration has resulted in rapid developments in the scientific and technological fields. But at the same time it carried a number of problems requiring legal solutions. Consequently, space law started to emerge as a separate branch of international law. During 1960s and 70s, five major treaties were entered in the field of outer space under the auspicious of the United Nations. However, these treaties are directed solely towards the regulation of State activities in outer space, since the private space activities were unknown when the space treaties were drafted. Moreover, the progressive develspace law at the international level halted after the Moon Agreement, 1979 due to the divergence in the opinions of the States. These factors show that space law has failed to keep pace with space technology and the consequential changes in the exploration, use and exploitation of outer space and its resources. Now in the 21st century, with the entry of private sector into space activities, commercial use has emerged as a single largest
use of outer space. The commercial use includes space tourism, planetary resources exploitation, space research, remote sensing
of the Earth, direct television broadcasting, meteorology, telecommunication, telemedicine, etc. This shift from State sponsored space activities to private space activities has made the world community rethink the existing space law which is directed towards the  regulation of traditional State activities in outer space and not towards the regulation of modern commercial space activities. .......................................................................................
