Description
Soli Sorabjee was a giant, a consummate lawyer, a deft advocate and above all a gracious human being whose personal qualities and professional eminence pur him on a high pedestal and in a class by himself. A book to honour his memory does not call for any explanation or justification. To dip into his life and work is to partake of a rich legacy that will survive the ravages of time and continue to enrich and inspire generations to come. The genesis of the book was a message from Dr. Manish Arora the very day that Sorabjee passed away mooting the idea of a book under my editorship to honour Soli's memory. I readily accepted to do it with all love and reverence. The book contains besides a fairly comprehensive biographical sketch, notes on judgments in important cases that he argued and helped in laying down the law. This portrays his magnificent contribution to, as also the history of, the onward march of the law. For about 60 years Sorabjee helped in building brick by brick the edifice of our constitutional law and administrative law. Every brick in that edifice may be said to bear his imprint. Also included are some writings of Sorabjee, some of them unfinished and also a couple of his opinions. Then there are writings by illustrious contributors across the board recounting their reminiscences and writing about the man and his work. There is also a very personal piece by his wife and another personal writing by his son. All these give interesting insights into his life, his persona and his work, kindle our interest, evoke our respect and add value to the book. I am deeply indebted to all the distinguished persons who have written for the book.
