Description
Smith, Hogan, and Ormerod's Essentials of Criminal Law is a textbook designed for undergraduate students of criminal law, Being targeted at that audience means that the book is focused on teaching and learning, devoting space to explanations of criminal law concepts in a step-by-step manner and avoiding assumed knowledge. The book highlights complexities and/or points of common confusion so readers can understand the problem areas. The text is complemented throughout by numerous visual aids, including flow charts, case boxes, and offence charts, in order to help those who learn more effectively through visual representations. We also address student concerns with assessment by providing guidance in each chapter focusing on potential problem questions. In each chapter we also include sections dedicated to debate about reform, focusing on potential essay questions. Our focus on teaching and learning and the accessible presentation is supported by the quality of the content, with the book maintaining the ideals for which Smith, Hogan, and Ormerod criminal law books are renowned: exposing and analysing the complexities of the law, setting the law in the context of surrounding academic debate, and high-lighting potential reform options that might steer the law towards greater coherence and fairness. Our aim is to provide readers with an understanding of the essentials of criminal law, in a way that is accessible to all students.
