Author Details
The Hon'ble Michael Kirby was a Justice of the High Court of Australia (the nation's apex court) 1996-2009. Previously, he had served as President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal (1984-96); Judge of the Federal Court of Australia (1983-84); and inaugural Chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission (1975-84). He was also President of the Court of Appeal of Solomon Islands (1993-96).
In addition to his judicial duties, he has fulfilled many United Nations and international positions. These have included: Special Representative of the Secretary General to Human Rights in Cambodia (1993-96); President of the International Commission of Jurists (1995-98); Member of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group (2009-11); Commissioner of the UNDP Global Commission on HIV and the Law (2011-12); and Chair of the UN Human Rights Council's Commission of Inquiry on North Korea (2013-14). Michael Kirby has travelled extensively in India, including by road in 1970 and 1974. He has a great love for India and many connections with the Indian judiciary and legal profession. He delivered the 2013 Tagore Lectures at the Iniversity of Calcutta in December 2013.
