Editing this book, the preface to the first edition of which was written way back in August 1912 and has seen nineteen editions over a span of more than 100 years, is like handling a double-edged sword. This is perhaps the only legal publication where editorial association has remained in the same family for four generations over 100 years. Laxity, even a little bit might be incomparable reputation richly and rightfully earned by this book, a classic on the subject of law of evidence, is the threat constantly faced by anyone that undertakes the work of editing and updating. Unfortunately, I am not an exception; even though, undoubtedly privileged.
Conscious of that fact, editing is undertaken with the objects :
*  Slimming the size of the book without compromising the content.
*  Adding gist of many important decisions pronounced since last edition
*  Referring to law and decisions of other countries wherever feasible,
*   Keeping intact its style and unique features,
*  Avoiding repetition to the extent possible,
