Description
Penology and victimology both are the specialized branches of the study of criminology. While penology is a multi-disciplinary subject that aims at study and evaluation of the application of penal laws onto the criminals, victimology deals with the study of victims of crime and their assistance in the form of security, protection, compensation, rehabilitation and restitution.
Until the closing decades of the last century, in practice, the entire criminal proceedings in the Courts were focused more on the rights and interests of the accused, neglecting the victim's interests excepting that victims were summoned to Itender evidence. However, by the end of the 20th century onwards, there was greater awareness on the part of higher judiciary of the need for better treatment of crime-victims by criminal justice agencies at different stages in India. This is reflected in different recommendations and suggestions of the Committees and Commissions calling for reforms in the criminal justice system and judgments of the Courts.
The present book is an endeavour to critically analyse and evaluate the latest developing trends in penology and victimology, taking stock of contemporary developments and changes of the new millennium which are taking place in India and other parts of the globe, notably, USA and U.K. The Indian perspective with relevant statutory laws and amendments therein and authoritative decisions of the higher judiciary on the subject are particularly taken care of to elucidate the
contents.
