Description
The previous editions of this work have been successful in filling a gap in the literature on this branch of the law. Eleven years have now passed since the last edition. As the new editor I could have done one of two things. First, I could have rewritten the book substantially, attempting to make it similar in style to more modern textbooks, deleting old material, repetitive quotations and unilluminating examples. Secondly, I could have left the book much as I found it, merely bringing it up to date. I have chosen the latter course because I believed that it was not my task in this edition to rewrite the book. Moreover, there are certain benefits in leaving it in its present form, since the numerous quotations and illustrations may be of use to practitioners as well as students. I have concentrated mainly on bringing the book up to date, introducing recent quotations and case illustrations. Only material which has little present relevance has been deleted and I have rewritten sections only where I felt that it was absolutely necessary. I hope that in this way I have preserved the character of the work yet introduced pertinent material which may not always be readily found elsewhere.
