A book on Justice M. N. Venkatachaliah hardly calls for any explanation or justification. Indeed, it is long overdue. To study his life and work is to share in a rich and awesome heritage that will endure as long as law is a force in our lives and the graciousness of human nature appeals to mankind. Both the lawyer and the layman will benefit from it. The general reader will get a broad range of the matters that underlie the jurist's art. The lawman will find with great gratification the work of a master craftsman realizing and appreciating the gamut of its remarkable brilliance and the moderation that characterized its finest flowering. Everyone will be stirred to the soaring spirit of one who, functioning in the cloistered halls of justice, approached legal problems with the philosopher's breadth of vision. Judicial restraint that may have characterised his outlook and philosophy did not come from any rigid doctrine but from a healthy mistrust of the idea that judges necessarily know better. The significant legacy of his judicial life and work lies in his demonstration that wise and detached judging is in fact humanly possible. It may be rightly said that he belongs not merely to his generation but to a line which reflecting the genius of the human race, has moved with unbroken continuity through the centuries. He is a shining example and an illustrious inheritor of a great inheritance.
