He sought toprotect the commonman against abuse ofpower, whether by the state, theTrade Unions orthe great corporations.He did what he could to helpdeserted wives. In1963 the Public Oratorat Cambridge said "This manconsiders that therigours of laws andprecedent should be tempered byhuman feeling for'He who clings to theletter is clinging to a cork." Hewas sensitiveto what ordinary peoplethought and had the common touch.
