Description
"Gentlemen of the Jury! No doubt the throat of this commercial traveller has been cut. But it is not my fault. It is the fault of the knife. Must we, because of such a temporary inconvenience abolish the use of the knife? Should you abolish the knife, you would hurl us back into the depths of barbarism." The above passage, coming as it did, from the pen of a great English writer of 19th century, Charles Dickens, is at once ironic as well as profound. To comprehend the same a student requires some measure of English language not only at the elementary level, but also at a higher level. There is a misconception among many in India that English is a foreign language but the fact is that English along with other national languages like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali... etc. is also a national language. There is a sizeable chunk of Anglo-Indian population in our country. They are as much Indians as any other Indian nationality. Also, nobody should forget the role the English language played during the time of our freedom struggle uniting all the nationalities of the country. Gandhiji spoke in English, Subhash Chandra Bose spoke in English. Incidentally, Gandhiji was an Advocate.
