Description
Environmental Law is one of the important branches of Public law prescribed for study as compulsory paper for LL.B/B.L/B.G.L (both 3 years and 5 years) degree courses in almost all Indian Universities. Similarly, Environmental studies has been prescribed for study as compulsory paper recently in degree level (Viz. B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., etc.,) including Pre-Law of 5 years LL.B. Degree Course (in addition to Environmental Law) in pursuance of the direction from the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. The global problem of the present day is the environmental pollution and hence, the subject 'Environmental Law' has attained great importance all over the world. 'Right to live' is now globally recognised as a fundamental right to an environment adequate for healthy well-being of human beings. In the absence of appropriate legal machinery, environmental standards cannot be maintained. The First United Nations Conference on Human Environment held at Stockholm in 1972 called for an International Policy for the protection and improvement of the Environment. Almost all the member states passed legislations on environment. In India, nearly 200 Central and State legislations on environment were passed. The main objective of environmental law is to preserve and protect the nature's gift viz. water, air, earth and atmosphere, which are part and parcel of environment.
