Description
The value structure in Indian society reflects the dual concept of the female in Hindu Philosophy. On one hand women is considered productive, compassionate bestowed of property; on the other hand she is considered belligerent, malicious and destructive. This dual character manifests in the goddesses also, as there are dangerous, aggressive, malevolent goddesses like Kali and Durga; there are equally important goddesses like Laxmi and Saraswati who are benevolent. During the Vedic period women had taken pleasure in liberty and equality. This period can be termed as the period of feminine splendor and also of male judiciousness and tolerance. Women participated in all spheres like men, studied in Gurukuls and enjoyed equality in learning Vedas. In higher societies women were allowed to undergo Upanayana sanskar. Great women like Gargi, Maitreyi, Apala, Ghosa, Lopamudra, Indrani and Yami were accomplished in art, music, dance and even in art of fighting. In Post-Vedic period the position of women suffered a setback when various restrictions were put on woman's rights and privileges by Manu. The birth of a daughter which was not a source of anxiety during the Vedic period, became the source of calamity for the family. The medieval period saw women being discriminated and subjugated in the feudal social order and patriarchal families.
