Law of crimes is the body of law that relates to crime. Indian Penal Code, 1860 deals with various crimes. Law of crimes regulates social conduct and proscribes whatever is threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and moral welfare of people. It includes the punishment of people who violate these laws. Criminal law varies according to jurisdiction, and differs from civil law, where emphasis is more on dispute resolution and victim compensation than on punishment. Crime is an offence against society and forbidden by law. Criminal law protects the person and the property. The object of the criminal law is not to punish the criminals but to reduce crimes in the society. Crimes are different from country to country and changing from time to time. An act which is crime in India may not be a crime in another country. There is enormous growth of Indian socio-economic-political since independence. The student of law requires proper understanding of crimes and the methods of prevention and control of crimes. This subject deals with various crimes namely offences against the State, property, body etc. The knowledge and skill of relating to the criminal law is essential to build a just and humane society.
