Description
It was almost half a century ago when the first edition of this book was published. Since then 12 editions have been released at an average of 4 years per edition, every time revised by the original author Dr Avtar Singh, which ensured its success. It is for the first time that the book is now revised by another person. In my opinion, like Sir William ANSON, the famed author of Anson's Law of Contract, Dr Singh wanted his book “to be a clear statement of the basic principles 'which govern the contractual obligation from its beginning to its end', illustrating ‘general rules by the most recent or striking decisions', and doing so 'in such a way as might best induce the student to refer to cases, and to acquire the habit of going to original authorities instead of taking rules on trust”l. This has been my guiding principle also, while revising this book. Revising a book is like refurbishing an old building, which in addition to repairing and painting, can involve some structural changes as well, especially when their original creator happens to be another person. However, the main structure is generally not disturbed. Similarly, the chapterisation of the book has been kept intact, yet a decent amount of rewriting and reorganisation has been carried out within many chapters.
