Description
It now seems a very long time ago that Michael Furmston invited me to join the team that was to produce the first edition of this work in 1999. Only the 'two Rogers' remain of that original team but Roger Brownsword and I have since been joined by distinguished and experienced colleagues from the UK and overseas. For this edition I would like to welcome three new contributors: Kwan Ho Lau, Dr David Pearce, Dr 'George' Zhou. The major omission for this edition is of course the contribution of Michael Furmston, a contributor to and General Editor of, all previous editions who died in 2020. In one of the many obituaries written to mark his death Michael
was described as . . . one of the common law world's most eminent scholars of English contract law'. Indeed he was, but he was also much more besides. Michael believed in and practised the global reach of his subject, was a keen fan of cricket and an expert chess player and as I found in 1999 a generous and encouraging colleague to younger colleagues. Michael will be missed by many around the world. The aim of this edition remains the same as the first: to give a comprehensive account of the English law of contract enriched with material from other common law jurisdictions. I believe that collectively we have reached the high standard set by previous editions and so this edition is dedicated to the memory of our friend Michael.
