Description
There are 100 to 200 billion galaxies in the Universe, each of which has hundreds of billions of stars (like our Sun). A recent German supercomputer simulation put that number ever higher : 500 billion. Our Solar System is in the Milky Way Galaxy, just one of many galaxies. Its name "milky" is derived from its appearances as a dim glowing brand arching across the night sky whose individual stars cannot be distinguished by the naked eye. From Earth the Milky Way appears as a band because its diskshaped structure is viewed from within. Galileo Galilei first resolved the band of light into individual stars with his telescope in 1610.
