Labour laws protect the interest of the labourer, workers and the managements. Payment of Wages Act, 1936 regulates the payment of wages to workers employed in certain specified industries. The Minimum Wage Act, 1948 prevents exploitation of labour. ESI Act, 1948 tries to attain the goal of socio-economic justice. Provident Fund Act, 1952 enacted for the benefit of employees working in factories. The Workmen's Compensation Act, 1923, provides for the payment of compensation by the employer to his employees if personal injury is caused to them. Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 ensures that employers do not discriminate on the basis of gender, in matters of wage fixing, transfers, training and promotion. Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 provides for the payment of bonus to persons employed in certain establishments on the basis of profits or on the basis of production or productivity and for connected matters. Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 regulates the voluntary payment made by the employer to the employee. Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 provides social justice to women workers employed in factories, mines and plantation. The Factories Act, 1948 ensures adequate safety measures and to promote the health and welfare of the workers employed in factories.
