Description
Labour laws have been enacted to promote the conditions of the labour keeping in view the development of industry and national economy. economy. These legislations protected more the interests of the employers than safeguarding the interest of the workers. The Factories Act was passed in 1881 and the Mines Act in 1901. The most important Acts as were passed to protect the interest of the workers was the Workmen's compensation Act, 1923. Some of the social security legislations are the Employee's State Insurance Act, 1948, the Employee's Provident funds Act, 1952 and the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. Laws were also made to regulate the labour management relations. Some of them are; the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947, the Trade union Act, 1926 and the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946. some of the labour legislations ensuring labour welfare and minimum standards such as the Factories Act, 1948, the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, the Payment of Wages Act, 1936 and the Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 were also enacted. The student should get an insight into the mechanics of socio-legal control of labour relations and should be aware of the history, the present norms, the emerging areas and possible future techniques of labour jurisprudence.
