Description
the three driving forces of civilization which found a remarkable meeting point in him. He was truly the very spirit and embodiment of Renaissance of which he was a product and his contribution to its growth and promotion was stellar. Great men spread an aura and aroma that outlive their mortal sojourn. Sir Asutosh Mookerjee was such a man. This work was published to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary and celebrate the event. This requires no justification and its purpose is outlined in the Preface to the first edition. This edition contains a couple of additional articles and more importantly extracts from his Minutes books (judge's) containing his notes of arguments of counsel as also some mathematical theorems worked out by him. 2024 marked the centenary of his passing and it was thought appropriate to bring out this edition.
Sir Asutosh was a man of many parts who played many a role with distinction. He touched the lives of the people and the country at different points and left his indelible imprint. As Justice Venkatachaliah says in his Foreword, Sir Asutosh was like a mountain peak that dazzles in the last rays of the setting sun. No words can adequately describe the contribution of Sir Asutosh to the enrichment of India's intellectual renaissance, a brilliance matched only by his dedication to the idea of India in its truest and noblest manifestation.
I am deeply grateful to all who have been of help and encouragement: Chief Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah for his Foreword and Chief Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee for his Introduction and both of them for their constant support and guidance which have gone a long way in bringing out this book and to the Asutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute for all the support and help. Special thanks are due to Dr. Partha Sarathi Das of the Asutosh Section, National Library, Kolkata for providing extracts from Sir Asutosh's Minutes book and his Mathematical notes.
The Publishers and particularly Dr. Manish Arora deserve all compliments and gratitude for bringing out this second edition with efficiency and elegance.
