Description
The insurance business is the core of the financial system and contributes a significant portion to the GDP of the country by generating savings from the public. Swiss Re ranked India as the cleventh biggest insurance business with great potential for financial inclusion and social security of the people in 2021-2022 Though the insurance business in India can be traced back a long way, modern insurance evolved from the insurance business of England. Insurance existed in a fragmented form carlier, but the nationalization of the business paved the way for developing a number of products in life and non-life business arenas. The globalization and privatization of markets and liberalization of the economy prompted speedy economic reforms, and the insurance business followed suit. The establishment of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India for accelerating the insurance business has helped in fair, transparent and orderly growth of the insurance industry by framing an effective and efficient regulatory framework to protect the interests of the policyholders. PROF. (DR.) A.V. NARSIMHA RAO is Director, ICFAI Law School, ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education (Deemed University), Hyderabad, from 2016. His subjects of interest include Environmental Law, Insurance Law, Intellectual Property Rights (Copyrights and Trademarks), Company Law, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Corporate Governance and Ethics. He is the author and editor of several books and has published articles in many newspapers, journals and magazines, Prof. Rao was the editor of the ICFAI Journal of Insurance Law. He has participated and presented papers at numerous national and international conferences and seminars.
