Description
I happen to see the Boilers Act and regulation made thereunder. I was astonished to see that major portions of the regulations were in fps system. This assumed more importance as we went metric by law on December 1956 and even after 64 years we are still talking about inches, tons and pound force. But then I look up the date of the Act on the subject, which was 23rd February of 1923 and the regulations were made in 1950 and I understood the reasons for regulations being in not metric units. Going deeper I found that the metric units have been used but of much older version. At one time gravitational force was in vogue, which was the force experienced by a body of known mass under standard gravity condition. International Community adopted International System of Units abbreviated as SI in 1960. We have been following by the Act of the Parliament the International System of units since 1976. The Parliament enacted, on 8th April, 1976, the Standards of Weights and Measures Act (60 of 1976). According to SI there is a unification of units of energy whether mechanical, electrical or heat. Unit of energy is joule for all energy measurements. A clear distinction was made between mass and weight. The unit of force was declared as newton while that of mass as kilogram. The weight of a body was taken as the force experienced by it at a particular place. Gravitational unit of force like kilogram force (kgf) was abrogated. Gravitational unit of force along with millimetre as unit of length was in vogue in engineering field. The symbols of all units in International System of Units have been assigned unambiguously. Normally, symbols of units are in brief case' except those which have been named after the names of the scientists like newton symbol N. No plurals exist for symbol of units. For kilogram the symbol is kg which remains unchanged even if the value of a particular quantity is several kilograms. For writing the value of the particular quantity there are two items, one is a numeral and another is its units. One may write distance between Delhi and Agra is 250 kilometres or just 250 km but not 250 kms. There is a space in between the numeral and its symbol. All symbols are written in upright form.
