Description
Herbert Cowell, Barrister-at-Law, was the Tagore Law Professor for the period 1870-72. His Tagore Law Lectures was on the subject "History and Constitution of the Courts and Legislative Authorities in India," a new subject at that point of time. It was such a scholarly work and became so popular that it ran into five editions. In 1936 when the sixth edition was to be published, there had been many changes in the law affecting the subject matter and as such a thorough revision was needed. The strenuous work of editing the sixth edition was entrusted to a very well known scholar in Law, Professor S.C. Bagchi, LL.D., Barrister-at- Law, the then Principal of the University Law College, Calcutta, and the Tagore Law Professor of the Calcutta University for the year 1914. Professor Bagchi made necessary additions and alterations without interfering with "the framework and scheme of the original book." He also made the book upto date by adding the new enactments on the subject and particularly the Government of India Act, 1935. The sixth edition, published in 1936, broadly speaking, covered the period upto 1935.
