Description
Herbert Cowell was a distinguished jurist and scholar having profound knowledge in laws in British India during the second half of the nineteenth century. He was chosen by the Calcutta University to deliver a few Tagore Law Lectures as "The Tagore Law Professor". In 1870 Herbert Cowell delivered Tagore Law Lectures on the Hindu Law and in 1872 he delivered Tagore Law Lectures on The History and Constitution of the Courts and Legislative Authorities in India. Both of them have been widely appreciated as classical works in India and abroad.
Herbert Cowell's Tagore Law Lectures on The Hindu Law is a treatise on the law administered exclusively to Hindus in respect of the ancient Hindu Law, the position of the Hindus in the British Empire, the Hindu Joint Family, Maintenance and Guardianship, the Hindu Widow, the Hindu Adoption etc. These Lectures are confined to the period upto 1870.
In this edition attempts have been made to show the trend of development in the said fields till the post independence period, so that a comparative study of the ancient Hindu law with the modern Hindu law can be made. To make this edition more useful to the readers five statute-laws in force in India are given in Appendices. The original texts of the Lectures have been retained untouched to maintain their importance and features. The customary and statutory laws have been added in separate paragraphs with headnotes so that these are distinguishable from the original word.
It is hoped that this edition will be useful to all concerned.
I highly appreciate the sincere efforts rendered by Mr. Sujit Kumar Kar on behalf of the Publishers to bring out this new edition.
