Description

"Environmental emergency" was declared by the Supreme Court of India looking at the grave situation of the air pollution in and around Delhi as it was also declared to be the most polluted capital/city of the world. It also put a blanket check on the construction and industrial activities and banning of trucks in Delhi.' In August, 2020, Mauritius Government also declared "emergency" due to huge oil spillage on its shores. On the other side, the UK became the first country to declare "environment and climate emergency" on 1 May 2019 with the objective of eliminating the emission of "greenhouse gases" altogether by 2050.³ Moreover, in COP-26 (2021) meeting in Glasgow, the Prime Minister of India has also committed to becoming a "Zero Carbon" (becoming carbon neutral) country by 2070 which was not taken in good taste." It is also disappointing as India is the fourth-largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world after China, the EU and America. This all shows the commitment of the world nations to implement the Paris Agreement simultaneously develop non-conventional sources of energy like solar, (2015) with all sincerity and completely stop the use of fossil fuels and wind, small hydro tides, geothermal heat, biofuel (like biogas, bio alcohol and biodiesel-alcohol), geothermal energy, ocean energy and biomass This all establishes that there is an urgent need to take effective and energy as they are renewable and do not cause harm to the environment. substantial steps to balance between development and environment. It needs to mention that India is not making progress in achieving the 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" set in 2015 and as per the Sustainable Development Report (SDR), 2021, India stands on 120th place out of 194 countries, which is not a good sign and is a matter of great concern. This all amply prove that we are lagging far behind in achieving the SDGs.
