Description
Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman presented Union Budget for the Financial Year 2020-21 in Lok Sabha on 1st February, 2020. This was second regular Budget of NDA-2 Government. Main feature of this year's Budget proposal for Indirect Tax has been hike in duties of Customs across the Board, either by withdrawing exemptions or by tweaking Tariff rate of Customs duty upwards. Host of manufac¬tured products from fans, shavers, water heaters and ovens, to shoes, mattresses and lamps, refrigerator and air-conditioner compressors to electric vehicles and circuit board of mobile phones will now carry higher rates of Customs duty. Imported eatables like whey powder, butter, cheese, ghee, butter oils would also become costlier. In case of Walnut Kernel, increase is very steep from 30% to 100%. To discourage import of cheap Chines. Toys, Dolls, Tricycles, etc., import duty on these items has also been steeply hiked from 20% to 60%. Time will tell whether this move would push Government's made in India policy or not but definitely it would make these items costlier thereby effecting demand in already slackening market. Keeping in mind dwindling exports, FM in her Budget Speech announced that a new scheme NIRVIK would be launched this year to reimburse taxes and duties paid by them. This scheme is proposed for taxes whose refund is not covered under any existing mechanism. This announcement is welcome for exporters. How¬ever, with official estimate of GDP growth pegged at 5% for FY 2019-20, lowest in past 11 years, whether these guarded stimulus are sufficient to revive economy is a million dollar question. At present, Government's ambi¬tious goal of India becoming a 5 Trillion Dollar economy in next four years appears far off.
