Description
In 1962, the U.S President John F. Kennedy propounded the four basic rights of consumers in a speech, he made to the Congress. These rights were (1) Right to choose freely (2) Right to be heard (3) Right to be informed and (4) Right to be safe. Later on, these four principles formed the foundation of Federal Protection for U.S Consumers and later came to be known as the Consumer Bill of Rights. In our country also, as supply of good and services evolved, there arose a need to have a qualified Consumer Law to protect the rights of consumers. In 1986, the Consumer Protection Act was enacted to give a statutory framework to protect the rights of consumers. Various Rules were also framed under the said enactment to give effect to the provisions of the Act. In the year 2019, the new Consumer Protection Act was enacted thus repealing the old one. The Consumer Protection Act 2019 is a comprehensive enactment which is meant to protect the rights of consumers. After the enforcement of the Act, various Rules and Regulations were framed under the enactment. The Consumer Forum which is functioning in District level is given powers to adjudicate upon disputes where there is deficiency of service and goods are
involved. Various mechanisms are inbuilt in the Act so as to give effect to the Orders of the Forum. Thus, in today's world it can be very well said that the rights of consumers are given due recognition and by this statutory framework those rights are given protection under the law. The law on consumer protection thus assumes profound importance in today's scenario.
